How to Prepare For Moving to a Senior Living Community

Preparing for a move to a retirement community

The Process of Moving to a Retirement Community in Columbus, Georgia

If you’re thinking about moving to a retirement community, you probably have a lot of questions about how to make a smooth transition into this new chapter of your life. Here at The Lodge in Columbus, Georgia, we want to give you some insights into what it’s like to move to a senior living community.

How will I find the right retirement community?

At The Lodge, we want to help you on your journey to a new home with our Navigating Senior Living Options Guide. The guide is a comprehensive insight into the things to look for in a retirement community, such as whether the team members are welcoming and helpful if the community is an easy drive from all the things you do (grocery shopping, taking day trips, heading to worship services, etc.), if it offers quick access to your healthcare providers, whether pets are allowed, etc. You can get the full list of things to consider by getting a copy of the guide from our website.

How should I evaluate a senior living community that interests me?

We’re big fans here at The Lodge of not being afraid to ask some pointed questions when choosing a retirement community. We suggest you take the time to inquire about the community’s financial health and whether there have been any complaints about life there. That’s an important part of doing your homework and making sure you’re picking the best possible community.

What retirement community costs do I need to consider?

Retirement communities typically have an entry fee you pay in order to move in as well as monthly fees covering a range of services. Here at The Lodge, the monthly fee will help you live a maintenance-free lifestyle by covering housekeeping, landscaping, trash removal and other services. That will free up future time to spend with family and friends instead of worrying about household chores.

Additionally, the monthly fee also takes care of home maintenance and repair costs, including utilities, dining services, round-the-clock security, and other items.

The Fee-for-Service contract provides you the opportunity to only pay for services if and when you need them. So, should you need assisted living or memory support, you do not have to prepay for those services if you are in Independent Living.

The Entrance Fee varies depending on the apartment or villa you choose. You should consider the contract options that are available. At The Lodge, you can choose between a Traditional or 50% refundable contract which can safeguard your money to be returned to you or your estate when you leave the community.

How will the community handle my future care needs?

Retirement communities often offer a full continuum of care that provide gradually higher levels of support as your needs change. That means that in addition to independent living, the community offers assisted living to assist you with daily tasks like getting dressed and managing your medications as well as other levels of care. It’s an approach that provides peace of mind that you won’t have to move to a new community as your needs evolve. In addition to independent living and assisted living, The Lodge will also offer memory support, skilled nursing and rehabilitation.
